Missing Manager
The Missing Manager policy can be used to ensure that sent emails will always include a specific recipient. For example, for a given policy route, you might want to ensure that a manager or compliance officer is aware of certain emails leaving your company.
The Missing Manager Policy policy uses Manager Relationships to ensure that outbound messages are intercepted if the sender does not include their manager in the list of recipients.
You can configure Missing Manager to:
- Include all users
- Ignore users with no manager
- Ignore messages with no attachments
- Perform disposal actions (What to Do? actions) when the conditions are met

-

These settings enable you to configure the way you want the Gateway to apply the Missing Manager policy.

Ignore messages
You can define which messages are ignored by the global Missing Manager policy, even if they do not include the manager of the sender.
- Enable Missing Manager using the steps in Enable Missing Manager globally.
- Beside Missing Manager Detection in the What to Look for? panel, click Click here to change these settings.
-
Enable check boxes to:
- Ignore messages where the sender is in the relationships list with no manager
- Ignore messages that have no attachment
- Click Save.
-
Specify what to do when missing a manager
You can enable global Missing Manager settings that will apply to every route unless that route is already using a Missing Manager content rule, which triggers if the sender’s manager is not a recipient of the message.
- With Missing Manager enabled, check that the Missing Manager Detection conditions are correct.
- In the What to Do? panel, click Click here to change these settings beside When Missing Manager detected.
-
Select a Disposal Action from the menu.
If you select Perform no action as your disposal action, you must create an Add A Mail Recipient action under What Else To Do? for the policy to behave as expected. This appends the configured email address to the message when it is processed.
If you select Hold as a disposal action or choose to relay the message, you aren't required to create an Add A Mail Recipient action.
- Click Save.
-
Specify what to do when the sender is not in the relationships list
If the sender is not in the relationships list, their manager relationships are not known and the Gateway would otherwise be unable to apply a Missing Manager policy to these messages. If the sender is not listed in the relationships list, follow the steps below to specify what happens to these messages.
- With Missing Manager enabled, check that the Missing Manager Detection conditions are correct.
- In the What to Do? panel, click Click here to change these settings beside When the sender is not in the relationships list.
-
Select a Disposal Action from the menu.
You can include an additional action, such as Send a Copy or Generate an Alert. To do this, click the New button next to What Else To Do? and select an action from the list. Click to remove actions if necessary. For help about adding or editing additional actions, see What To Do? Actions.
- Click Save.
