Configuration Backup and Restore

Secure Email Gateway saves previously applied configurations in the Configuration History.

Configuration Backup and Restore enables you to backup these configurations by exporting them to disk or emailing them to a specific email address. You can also restore a previously applied configuration from the Configuration History or restore a backed-up configuration from disk.

Configuration areas available for backup and restore

Configuration area	Description
Policy	All policy configurations defined in the Policy menu
System Settings	Configurations defined in System > Configuration System Settings restore does not include PMM, Peer Gateways and Ethernet settings.
PMM Settings	Configurations defined in System > PMM Settings To restore PMM settings only, select PMM Settings and Peer Gateways
Users	User account configurations defined in the in the Users menu The administrator (admin) account is neither backed up nor restored.
Custom Reports	Custom reports created or modified in the in the Reports menu
TLS Configuration	Applies or restores the global TLS configuration defined in System > Encryption > TLS configuration
Maintenance Settings	Scheduling options and configurations used by System > GatewaySettings > Database Optimization
Network Settings	Applies or restores peer configurations defined in System > System Settings > Ethernet Settings This option is unavailable if you are restoring a configuration to a Peer Gateway.
Peer Gateways	Peer configurations defined in System > Configuration > Peer Gateways Do not select this option if you are restoring a configuration from a different Gateway. This will result in a loss of the local peer configuration.

Configuration Backup & Restore applies only to your system configuration. It does not include other elements, such as held messages, tracking and report database and Gateway logs. These can be archived for disaster recovery purposes using System Backup and Restore. It is not possible to restore Peer Gateway configurations directly from a disk archive (i.e. configurations backed up in a disk). You can, however, re-add peers and apply the current configuration to each peer. If the Gateway is operating in FIPS Mode, you can only restore FIPS-compliant configurations. If required, FIPS-compliant configuration backups can be applied to non-FIPS Gateways.

View the Configuration History

1. Navigate to System > Configuration > Backup & Restore. The Backup & Restore page is displayed.

2. Select the Configuration History tab. Previously applied configurations are displayed.

   If more than 10 configurations have been applied, you can view older configurations by expanding the Preceding Configurations list.

3. Select a configuration from the list. The Configuration Details are displayed. If a log is available for the deployment, a link to the log is provided.

Backup the configuration

You can export previously applied configurations from the Configuration History to a location of your choice. This is useful for archiving changes made to your security policy, as well as providing an external backup of your system configuration.

When upgrading your Gateway, backup your configuration before you install an upgrade, so you have a backup available if you need to restore a previous version of the software.

How do I...

• Backup a configuration

  1. Navigate to System > Configuration > Backup & Restore. The Backup & Restore page is displayed.

  2. Select the Configuration History tab. Previously applied configurations are displayed.

  3. Select the configuration you wish to backup.
  4. In the task panel, click Backup the selected Configuration.
  5. The configuration file (.bk) will be exported to disk (a suitable location on your computer).
• Email a configuration

  1. Navigate to System > Configuration > Backup & Restore. The Backup & Restore page is displayed.

  2. Select the Configuration History tab. Previously applied configurations are displayed.

  3. Select the configuration you wish to email.
  4. In the task panel, click Mail the Configuration.
  5. Specify the recipient(s) and the subject line in the Send Configuration to dialog.
  6. Click Send.

Restore the configuration

You can restore your Gateway to a configuration that was previously applied. You can do this either from the list of previously applied configurations on the Configuration History tab or from a configuration that has been backed up to disk.

Secure Email Gateway allows you to restore the system to a configuration that previously failed to deploy. For example, you might want to restore a configuration to resolve problems with it, then attempt to re-apply it.

How do I...

Only one administrator can apply a configuration at any one time. Simultaneous attempts to apply configurations will fail.
