Adding ACE and ARJ compression

ACE and ARJ are compression formats that are not in the public domain. They offer enhanced compression options over standard ZIP compression. CuteZIP ships with the ability to open archives that have been compressed with ACE and ARJ compression, however, by default CuteZIP will not create those types of archives.
Fortunately, GlobalSCAPE created a mechanism so that you can obtain components from the respective software manufacturers and incorporate those compression components into CuteZIP's interface. Each of the compression programs are available for download from the manufacturer. By downloading and installing the programs you will be liable to the conditions of their license agreements.
 

Adding ACE Compression

ACE compression is available from www.winace.com. You will need to download a program called Commandline Ace 2.02 [ace202.exe].
  1. Go to www.winace.com and download Commandline Ace 2.02 and save it to your hard-drive.
  2. Double-click on the program. This will extract a program called ace32.exe and associated documentation.
  3. Associate ace32.exe to CuteZIP. Choose Edit > Setting from CuteZIP's Menu bar. Choose External Programs from the Settings dialog box.
  4. Click the Browse button next to the ACE line. This will launch an Open window.
  5. Find and select the ace32.exe file you just extracted.
  6. Click Open.
  7. Click Apply and then OK on the Settings > External Programs window.
ACE [.ace] will now be an option anywhere archives are created or converted in CuteZIP.
 

Adding ARJ Compression

ARJ compression is available from www.arjsoftware.com. You will need to download a program called File Archiver ARJ32.
  1. Go to www.arjsoftware.com, download ARJ32 and save it to your hard-drive.
  2. Double-click on the program. This will create a directory called C:\ARJ and extract a program named arj32.exe and associated documentation.
  3. Associate arj32.exe to CuteZIP. Choose Edit > Setting from CuteZIP's Menu bar. Choose External Programs from the Settings dialog box.
  4. Click the Browse button next to the ARJ line. This will launch an Open window.
  5. Find and select the arj32.exe file you just extracted.
  6. Choose Open.
  7. Choose Apply then OK on the Settings > External Programs window.
ARJ [.arj] will now be an option anywhere archives are created or converted in CuteZIP.
 

Troubleshooting ACE and ARJ installations in CuteZIP

Since the ACE and ARJ programs are not manufactured by GlobalSCAPE and may change after the time of this writing we cannot guarantee full compatibility with those products and CuteZIP. The instructions above only cover certain programs available from the manufactures.
 

Finding ACE and ARJ programs on your computer

If you already have a an ACE or ARJ program on your computer you can use CuteZIP to automatically locate the files it needs to associate with to use those compression formats.
  1. From CuteZIP’s Menu bar choose Edit > Settings then choose External Programs setting window.
  2. Choose Auto-search for installed 3rd party tools.
  3. Choose Search.
  4. CuteZIP will automatically search your hard-drive for compatible programs.
  5. If a program is displayed in the External archiver search utility window then you may double-click on it and CuteZIP will automatically associate it with the correct archive type.
 

Long Filenames

Some older versions of ACE and ARJ programs may not support long filenames. If you are receiving error messages when using an external program with CuteZIP, try un-checking the Long filenames box associated with the archive format you are having trouble with.
  1. From CuteZIP’s Menu bar choose Edit > Settings then choose External Programs setting window.
  2. Un-check Long filenames box associated with the archive format you are having trouble with.
  3. Re-try creating an archive with the new setting.
