Schedule message release
You can configure Secure Email Gateway to deliver specific messages in off-peak times according to a schedule. This is a useful way of optimizing bandwidth usage, for example:
- You can manage large or oversize messages so that they are delivered in off-peak times.
- You can manage bulk mail-outs, to spread the delivery times over a long period.
Schedule message release
-
Decide which type of messages you want to be managed by a scheduled release.
Example 1: Messages sent from my organization's mail-out address
Example 2: Messages sent from a particular department which consistently generates oversize messages
-
Create a policy route for the messages you want to detect.
Example 1: From My Organization to Anyone
Example 2: From Department to Anyone
- Click Policy > Mail Policy Routes.
- Click New.
-
Configure your policy route, including the From and To fields.
For more detailed information on working with policy routes, see the topic About Policy Routes.
-
Create a content rule to detect messages which are larger than the threshold.
- Click Policy > Content Rules.
- Click New.
- Select Message size restriction from the list of content rule templates.
-
Configure your content rule, including the Message Size Restriction (KB). Messages which are larger than this value will be intercepted.
For more detailed information on creating and modifying content rules, see the topic Working with Content Rules.
-
Create a new disposal action for your content rule.
- Click Policy > Disposal Actions.
- Click New.
- Name the new disposal action (for example, 'Oversize')
-
Configure your disposal action to include a release schedule by selecting the Release Schedule tab.
Select the times you require using the displayed schedule. You can configure a Timed release which releases messages at the selected times. You can also configure a Delayed release which holds messages for an additional number of minutes. -
Click Add. When you create a disposal action, the Gateway automatically creates a corresponding message area with an identical name.
For more information on working with disposal actions, see the topic About Disposal Actions
-
Apply the new disposal action to your content rule.
- Click Policy > Content Rules.
- Select your content rule from the list and click Edit.
-
In the What to Do? section, use the Disposal Action drop-down menu to select your new disposal action.
For example, Hold in Oversize area. This holds detected messages and applies the release schedule you defined.
For more information on held message areas, see the topic Managing Held Messages.
-
Apply the content rule to your policy route.
- Click Policy > Mail Policy Routes.
- Select your policy route from the list and click Edit.
- In the Unless One Of These Content Rules Triggers section, click New.
-
Select your content rule from the list.
You can apply your disposal action directly to the policy route if required. This action will apply to every message that matches the route, rather than those triggered by the content rule.

Apply the Configuration
If you change any configuration or policy settings, you must Apply Configuration for the new settings to take effect. You can do this either from the Changes Made panel, or System > Configuration > Apply Configuration. See Apply new configuration for more information.
If you use Peer Gateways (i.e. when multiple Gateways are peered), any configuration changes from a local Gateway can then be applied to all the peers at the same time. See Peer Gateways for more information.
