Scanning

Scan Configuration

Fortra VM On-Premises scanners provide comprehensive, updated information about your environment’s security posture.

This page details the following topics:

Work with Scan Policies

This section describes how to view, modify, and create a scan policy, which is a set of instructions for a scanner. Fortra VM On-Premises has default policies for several common scanning objectives (for example, application discovery, host discovery, port scanning).

While a scanner only uses one scanner profile at a time, a profile can accommodate many scans—each of which with a different policy. A scan policy essentially tells the scanner how to process the scan by identifying scan speed, ports, scan credentials, password auditing, and vulnerabilities to include or exclude.

Add Credentials

Authenticated scanning gives you safer and more accurate scanning of your environment.

To create a scan credential:

  1. From the navigation menu, select Scan Settings > Scan Credentials.
  2. Select Add Credential.

  3. In the Add Credential dialog, complete the following fields:
    1. Alias name - For example, sally.doe@forest.org.
    2. Type - Select the type of system to scan (options include Windows, Linux, MSSQL, VMware ESX, MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, and SSH Key).
    3. Username - For example, sallydoe.
    4. Password Confirm - Confirm password
    5. Domain - For example, forest.org.
    6. Description - (Optional) Enter a description for these credentials.
  4. Select Save or Save and add another to create another set of scan credentials.

While you can add credentials when creating a scan policy, modifying and deleting credentials can only be done through the Credentials Manager. See ScanningScan Configuration for more information.

See Authenticated Scanning for more information.

Configure Scan Results Settings

To configure scan results settings, select the account, then select Scan Settings > Settings from the navigation menu. On the Scan Results Settings page, you can configure general settings, data retention, and matching and trending.

General

Under Risks and Threat Prioritization, you can configure the Default risk weight and change the default rating scheme.

TIP: Changing your Default risk weight can adversely affect your Security GPA. If you have questions about this setting, contact Fortra Support.

The available rating schemes are:

  • DDI — Uses Fortra’s proprietary rating scheme, with severities ranging from critical to trivial.

  • PCI — Uses pass/fail status as determined by the PCI Security Standards Council.

  • NVD — Uses the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS), as determined by the National Vulnerability Database (NVD).

IMPORTANT: The PCI rating scheme can help you determine which vulnerabilities would pass or fail a PCI assessment. A PCI-ASV scanning subscription is required to run a full PCI assessment and receive an attestation of compliance.

Data retention

Use Scan purge days to configure scan data retention.

NOTE: Purged scan data cannot be restored.

Matching and Trending

Asset matching determines whether new scan results belong to an existing asset history. These settings apply across the selected account. Configure internal and external matching separately.

Matching does not cross account or internal/external boundaries. Different explicit named targets are not combined solely because they share an IP address.

Users must have the Account settings administration permission, which is included in the Account Admin role, to save changes.

figure 1 - Internal and external IP fallback enabled, with the paired exclusive IP matching switches disabled.

What is identity matching?

Identity matching compares scan data—including NetBIOS and DNS names, agent UUIDs, MAC addresses, asset tags, and, where applicable, Windows machine security identifiers (SIDs) and AWS instance IDs—to match results to existing assets in the same scan or Active View.

OS information and names previously observed in Active View scan data provide additional context. Fortra VM evaluates this information together, checking for conflicting or ambiguous identities, to help preserve asset history when IP addresses change.

With IP fallback enabled, a shared IP address may establish a match when other identifiers are insufficient, subject to matching safeguards. With fallback disabled, an IP address can contribute to a match but cannot establish one alone.

Choose a matching mode

The following combinations apply separately to internal and external matching.

IP fallback Exclusive IP matching Behavior
ON OFF Uses identity matching first, with IP fallback when permitted. This is the default.
OFF ON Uses IP as the matching basis within the applicable account/profile scope and named-target context.
OFF OFF Uses identity matching without IP fallback.
ON ON Unsupported. Both options cannot be enabled for the same scope.
Static IP Matching Fallback

Use IP fallback internally and Use IP fallback externally allow an IP-based match after identity-based matching. Matching still checks for conflicting identities, names, and ambiguous results. A shared IP address does not guarantee a match.

IP fallback is the normal starting point for matching. Both fallback switches are ON by default.

For example, a later scan finds an asset at the same IP address but returns incomplete identity information. IP fallback may associate the results with the existing asset history if the matching safeguards allow it. With fallback OFF, the same IP address alone cannot establish the match.

Static IP Matching Exclusive

Use exclusive IP matching internally and Use exclusive IP matching externally use IP as the matching basis instead of dynamic identity matching. Both switches are OFF by default.

Use exclusive matching when stable IP addresses are intentionally the authoritative identity for your assets. Consider the effect on asset history before enabling it:

  • A machine that moves to a previously unseen IP address starts a new asset history.

  • A different machine that reuses an IP address can become associated with that IP’s existing history.

For example, a server moves from 192.0.2.10 to a previously unseen address, 192.0.2.20. In exclusive mode, the new address starts a new asset history. With identity matching, the server may retain its history if the available identity evidence establishes a match, whether IP fallback is ON or OFF.

Exclusive matching may be unsuitable for DHCP, roaming, VPN, NAT, or shared-IP environments.

Change the matching mode
  1. Under Matching and Trending, locate the internal or external matching switches.

  2. Turn OFF the active matching option for that scope.

  3. Configure the desired mode:

    • For IP fallback, turn ON Use IP fallback internally or Use IP fallback externally.

    • For exclusive matching, turn ON Use exclusive IP matching internally or Use exclusive IP matching externally.

    • For identity matching without IP fallback, leave both switches OFF.

  4. Select Save.

  5. Reload the page and confirm that your selections were saved.

The paired switch is disabled while the other mode is enabled. Internal and external modes can differ.

NOTE: Saved changes apply to subsequent eligible scan processing. Saving does not immediately rebuild historical asset associations.
Automatically merge duplicate assets

If available for your account, Automatically merge duplicate assets controls whether eligible VM scan processing can merge duplicate assets in the current Active View.

Fortra VM automatically combines duplicate asset records only when device names and other identifying information together show that they represent the same device. If the information conflicts or does not clearly establish a match, the records remain separate.

To configure automatic merging:

  1. If the control is unavailable, contact your account administrator or Fortra Support to verify availability.

  2. Under Matching and Trending, turn Automatically merge duplicate assets ON or OFF.

  3. Select Save, then reload the page to confirm the setting.

Each completed automatic merge is recorded in the audit log as an Auto Merge Assets event. These events are included in Account Activity reports that include Scan Results Management events.

Scans excluded from Active View do not trigger automatic merging.

NOTE: Saving does not immediately clean up all historical duplicates. Turning the option OFF prevents future automatic merges; it does not undo completed merges.

See Active View - Assets for eligibility details, examples, and guidance for reviewing unexpected asset histories.

Review defaults after upgrading
Setting Default
Use asset smart ID ON
Use IP fallback internally ON
Use IP fallback externally ON
Use exclusive IP matching internally OFF
Use exclusive IP matching externally OFF
Automatically merge duplicate assets ON; available only when enhanced matching is enabled

The upgrade to this functionality resets these five preferences to their shipped defaults for existing accounts. Review your saved settings after upgrading, especially if you require exclusive IP matching.

If Automatically merge duplicate assets is unavailable, contact your account administrator or Fortra Support.
