Working with the Message Log

Tracking the progress of a compliance check or finding the actual commands used to change objects using FixIt can be done by viewing the Message Log. Think of the message log as a “flight recorder” of everything that happens in Security Auditor.

Recording the Actions of an Administrator

Actions taken by all Security Auditor administrators are logged to the Message log. Actions such as creating or changing a template, running compliance check or FixIt, or Initializing or Importing functions are logged.

Print (View) the Message Log

To see the past activity you can print the Message Log. Go to Servers > Create Reports. Choose the servers to report on and select Message Log as the report type.

Purging the Message Log

The message log will grow so you will want to clear it periodically. A scheduled job is shipped with the console to aide in this process.

  • Choose Admin Tasks > Preferences to modify how many days’ worth of messages you want to keep.
  • Choose Admin Tasks > Manage Scheduled Jobs to modify when the Delete Old Data job is run.
NOTE: The messages in the message log are used to generate the FixIt reports. Therefore if you purge the message log after running FixIt, you will no longer be able to generate the FixIt report.
