Service Control

Services are programs that perform low-level functions to support other programs on the system.

From the Service Control page, you can view the status of Secure Email Gateway system services, and stop, start or restart the ones under manual control. This may be useful to temporarily stop or to restart some services when housekeeping or troubleshooting.

For example, if your inbound mail server is disabled you may wish to stop the SMTP Inbound Transport service until the problem is rectified.

View the services

  1. Navigate to System > Monitoring & Control > Service Control.The Service Control page is displayed.
  2. In the Current Status panel, the status of the services are listed.

     

    Gray icons in the Service column indicate that those services cannot be controlled manually.

    Service Description
    Anti Spam Service Manages spam detection by communicating with the Mailshell and Rspamd services.
    Certificate Store Manages certificateClosed A digital means of proving your identity. When you send a digitally-signed message, you are sending your certificate and public key. Certificates are issued by a certification authority and can expire or be revoked. validation and the service connecting to the Trust Center.
    Encryption and Decryption Manages the encryption, decryption, and signing of messages, and validation of signatures.
    Health and Statistics Gathers information on system health for display on the Health page and other pages of the Secure Email Gateway web interface.
    LDAP Address Synchronization Manages the synchronization of LDAP Synchronized Address Lists.
    Message Area Manager Manages the Secure Email GatewayHeld Messages.
    Message Auditor Manages the Secure Email Gateway auditing system.
    PMM Infrastructure

    Generates PMM digest messsages, and handles the digest responses from users.

    Policy Enforcement

    Manages the enforcement of the Secure Email Gatewaycontent security policy.

    SMTP Alert Transport Manages the delivery of SMTP Alerts.
    SMTP Inbound Transport Manages the delivery of inbound mail.
    SMTP Outbound Transport Manages the delivery of outbound mail.
    Sophos Virus Scanner

    Manages the Sophos virus scanning process.

    SQL Database Manages the SQL database tasks.
    System Logging Manages the system logs recorded by Secure Email Gateway.
    User Interface Manages the display of the Secure Email Gateway web interface.

Stop, start or restart a service

  1. Navigate to System > Monitoring & Control > Service Control.The Service Control page is displayed.
  2. In the Current Status panel, select the service and click Stop, Start or Restart.

     

    Available options depend on the current status of the service you have selected.

    Restart causes the Gateway to stop the service and start it again immediately.

  3. You may have to wait a few moments before the requested action completes. A dialog will then be displayed indicating whether the action has been successful, and the service's status in the Current Status pane will reflect the change.

Reboot and Shutdown

You can reboot or power off your Secure Email Gateway from the Service Control page.

 

To use this function, you need to be logged in to the product's web UI using the default administrator account.

If you are unable to access the web UI, you can reboot or power off from Red Hat Cockpit.

Reboot the Gateway

  1. Navigate to System > Monitoring & Control > Service Control.The Service Control page is displayed.
  2. In the task panel, click Reboot the Gateway.

  3. In the Confirm Reboot dialog, click Reboot.

    You will lose connection to Secure Email Gateway while it reboots. Wait for a few minutes before attempting to log in again.

Shutdown the Gateway

  1. Navigate to System > Monitoring & Control > Service Control.The Service Control page is displayed.
  2. Click Shutdown the Gateway on the task panel.
  3. In the Confirm Shutdown dialog, click Shutdown.

    You will lose connection to Secure Email Gateway while it shuts down.

     

    If you power off your Secure Email Gateway, you will need physical access to the Gateway to restart it.

    To power on the Gateway that is currently switched off, press the power switch on the front of the Secure Email Gateway system. For the location of the switches and sockets, consult the documentation included in the product packaging.
