Creating a new NT user account for the server

In order to securely run the FTP Server as a service, you will first need to create a user account in Windows for your FTP server.

 

Note Setting up an NT user account is helpful but not required in order to run CuteFTP Server. Click here for more information.

 

Windows NT Instructions:

  1. After you install the server, go to your Windows Control Panel > Administrative Tools > User Manager

  1. From the menu, select File > New User to create a new user account for "FTPServer".

  1. Enter appropriate information in all of the fields in the User Properties dialog box, as shown below.

  1. Click OK.

  1. From the menu bar, select Policies > User Rights. The User Rights Policy dialog will appear.

  1. Enable the Show Advanced User Rights check box at the bottom of the dialog.

  1. Select Act as part of the operating system from the drop-down box.

  1. Click Add. The Add Users and Groups dialog will appear.

  2. Make sure that the drop-down list at the top of this dialog has your own computer selected. Click the Show Users button and select FTPServer from the list

  3. Click Add.

  4. Click OK in both dialogs.

  5. Using Window's permissions, begin to assign permissions for this user account.

  6. After assigning permissions, you should assign the server to the new user account you have created and then log the server on as a service.

 

Windows 2000

  1. After you install the server, go to Start Menu > Settings > Control Panel> Administrative Tools > Computer Management.

  2. Select Local users and groups > Users.

  3. Click Action>New User to launch the New User dialog

  4. Enter the appropriate information in the New User dialog for ""FTPServer" user.

  5. Click Create.

  6. Close Computer Management console.

  7. Go to Start Menu > Settings > Control Panel> Local Security Settings

  8. Navigate to Security settings > Local Policies > User Rights Assignment

  9. Double-click on "Act as part of the operating system" under the policy column on the right side of the window

  10. Click Add... and then select the new user you just added (FTPServer) and click OK twice.

  11. Using Windows's permissions, begin to assign permissions for this user account.

  12. After assigning permissions, you should assign the server to the new user account you have created and then log the server on as a service.
