Configuring the server as a Windows service

CuteFTP Server runs as a system service on your computer. Even if you close the main CuteFTP Server Administrator Interface, the Server Engine itself will continue to run in the background.

To stop (or restart) the FTP server service

  1. Click Start > Programs > GlobalSCAPE > CuteFTP Server

  2. From the Administrator Interface, go to Edit > Service Applet Settings

  3. Click Stop to stop the service or Start to start it.

You can also mange your service from the Windows Control Panel >Administrative Tools > Services applet. Follow your Microsoft Windows documentation on how to start, stop, uninstall, and perform a variety of other service related actions using the services applet.

WARNING: Any time you run a server, you expose your computer to outside users. There is the potential for exposing files and programs on your computer and network to outside users, particularly should the server become compromised somehow.

Although you can set folder permissions from within the Server Administrator, you can add an extra level of protection by establishing an NT user account for the server and then limiting the server's user account permissions for folders the server has access to. This sets up a stopgap until you can restore the server/system to its uncompromised state.

To configure the server to run as securely as possible, you should:

  1. Create an NT user account for the server

  2. Assign permissions to this user account

  3. Assign the server to the account

  4. Log the server on as a service

  5. If necessary, configure the server's user account to map a virtual folder to a network drive
